Ultramarathon champion Michele Graglia attempts to break the world record for running 560 miles across Chile’s Atacama Desert

Michele Graglia is one of the world’s most successful ultramarathoners, regularly competing at the world’s highest level for races of more than 26.2 miles. He recently won the Badwater® 135—considered “The World’s Toughest Foot Race”—one of the most prestigious titles on the ultramarathon circuit. Graglia has won multiple other ultramarathons and broken more than seven course records since 2012.

The Atacama Desert

Chile’s Atacama Desert is one of the world’s harshest and most unforgiving landscapes. Stretching 600 miles (1,000 km) from north to south, it is considered the driest region on earth, with average rainfall of about 0.6 inches (15 mm) annually, and some parts that have never recorded measurable precipitation.

About the Event

Michele will begin September 15 in San Pedro de Atacama, running between 50 and 60 miles a day in order to set a new world record time of under two weeks to cross the 560-mile Atacama desert. TransPerfect will be providing monetary support, equipment, support staff, and a film and photography crew to document the run.

Is Michele crazy?

Maybe a little! In all seriousness, Michele is one of the world’s premier endurance athletes, and while he is attempting what is literally an unprecedented feat, we have supreme confidence that he will be both safe and successful.
